Weekly News

Notes and Reminders:

-          Next week we are going to be conducting an experiment involving snails. If you do see any snails in your gardens or when you are out and about, please could you scoop them up and bring them into school for Monday!

-          From next week the children will come home from school in their PE kits. Please can the children come to school on Friday morning dressed in their PE kits ready for the first lesson of the day.

-          Home learning for this topic has been sent out in books that have been handed in. Please complete 4 pieces of learning with your child.

-          The World Book Day reading challenge deadline has been extended.

-          Don’t forget our Word of the Week challenge, to earn 5 house points by writing a sentence at home.

In English we have continued to practise identifying the four types of sentences; commands, statements, exclamation sentences and questions. This week we particularly focussed on statements and questions. We wrote statements about moths and then thought of questions that we do not know yet. We found out that our Power of Reading book is called ‘Moth’. We started to read the book before writing super similes about the Peppered Moth before writing our own versions of the story’s ending.

In maths our topic has been 2D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school to identify shapes we could see. We discussed their properties and looked for ‘the odd one out’ in a group of shapes. We have also learnt to identify regular and irregular shapes. We found out that regular shapes have angles and sides that are equal in size. Looking closer at regular shapes, we also found vertical lines of symmetry by folding cut out shapes.

In computing we learnt the word ‘algorithm’. We found out that this is a set of instructions that have to be done in order to complete a task. We read the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and then drew our own algorithms.

Continuing our learning on moths and butterflies, we learnt about their lifecycle, which we then made using pasta shapes.

We are all looking forward to World Book Day tomorrow and sharing the lovely stories that the children bring in to go with their costumes, and spending some time doing Premier Sport activities.

Have a lovely weekend, Year 2 Team.
