We have had another great week in Year 2. On Monday we started planning our own monster story based on our Grendel Power of Reading book. We used a story map template to think about what our monster loves, what they wish for and then what goes wrong! We also learnt about exclamation sentences and found out that they must start with the word ‘what’ or ‘how’. “How exciting this is!” “What an amazing surprise!” In the afternoon we learnt about the basic needs of animals, including humans. We found out that all animals need air, food and water in order to survive. Using this knowledge, we wrote a fact file about our own monster to explain their basic needs and likes. On Tuesday we continued our previous learning about fact families. We looked at part whole models and then wrote 4 number sentences to explain the diagrams. 4         6         10 4 + 6 = 10 6 + 4 = 10 10 – 6 = 4 10 – 4 = 6 In the afternoon we used junk and recycling products to make our

It has been a very busy week in year 2. In English, we thought about our Power of Reading Book, Grendel. We designed and drew our own monsters to use later in the term in our own story. We focussed on adjectives and noun-phrases to describe our character. Scary, hairy monster. Fluffy, spotty monster. Sparkly, quiet monster. On Thursday we then looked at our monsters and added more adjectives and gave our friends some ideas too. We then learnt about the suffixes –ful, -est, and –ly. Using our knowledge of suffixes, we wrote a character description about our monsters. In maths we have been learning about fact families. We chose three numbers and created a bar model. Using this bar model we wrote 4 number sentences, two addition and two subtraction. 6 + 4 = 10 4 + 6 = 10 10 – 4 = 6 10 – 6 = 4 In DT we continued our scienfic learning about melting. With this knowledge we made rice crispy cakes and even counted them in groups of three! On Wednesday we had o

Weekly news We have had another lovely week in Year 2 and the children have worked really hard. We have done some fantastic work in English all about chocolate. We listened to Michael Rosen’s poem called ‘Chocolate’ and began thinking of our own ideas for a poem about chocolate. We each held a chocolate button in our hands and thought about how to describe it using our five senses. We even got to eat the melted chocolate! We then worked collaboratively in our colour groups to write a poem. We thought of some wonderful ideas and were really proud of our work. In Maths we have been practising counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and have begun to learn how to count in 3’s. We played an excellent game using our counting skills. We have been practising our Maths skills in a new whole class activity called ‘Fast Maths’ which we are loving. In our topic work this week we have carried out lots of exciting activities. We created some Carl Warner landscapes using pictures of food from

This week in Year 2, we have been learning all about chocolate! In History we learnt about John Cadbury and the creation of Cadbury’s chocolate. We made a timeline and plotted the key events. We found this very interesting to learn that John Cadbury’s business started off as a tea and coffee shop. In Geography, we used our knowledge of chocolate so far, to find out the start of the chocolate journey and where it comes from. We learnt that chocolate starts off as a cocao pod before being harvested for the cocao beans and shipped off to factories to be made into chocolate bars. We have also enjoyed a range of chocolatey themed Daily Activities including: making a chocolate factory with lego; designing a new chocolate bar and wrapper; using chocolate playdough and completing a chocolate word search. In English, we made our own predictions about how our Power of Reading book would end. We designed a story map to show this and tried hard to remember consistent punct
