Weekly News

On Monday we practised using chips and peas again, but this time we focussed on subtracting numbers! We found out that you must always start with the greatest number when you are subtracting.

In science we found another letter from Grendel. This time he had frozen his mum in the freezer to stop her melting but he wasn’t sure the quickest way to unfreeze her. We discussed in our colour group different ways that we could get her out of the ice. Our ideas included:

·         Put her in a hot bath

·         Hold her tightly in warm hands

·         Wrap her in a blanket

·         Put her on the radiator

·         Put her in the cupboard

·         Put her in the sunshine

·         Put her in the oven

We finally decided on the location we would use. We set up an experiment of a Lego character in a pot of water before putting it in the freezer overnight.

On Tuesday we shared the stories that we had written last week. Our friends listened us and we practised the skill of peer assessment. We each shared two things that were really good about the stories and thought hard for a target to help them be even better next time. We really enjoyed hearing so many different monster stories.

In the afternoon, we took our science experiments out of the fridge. We placed the frozen pot in our chosen location. Throughout the afternoon we checked on our frozen character and closely observed the changes before comparing them to others.

We also started to learn about light and dark. We found out about natural and man-made sources of light. Additionally, we learnt that objects that do not make their own light, reflect light.

On Wednesday morning we walked to the church. When we first arrived, we looked closely at our surrounds and thought about how this building compared to the synagogue that we visited previously. We noticed that both buildings have candles, walls, chairs and windows.

We then began moving around the church looking for sources of natural light, man-made light and reflectors. After that, we designed our own stained glass window before returning to school for an extra-long playtime!

On Thursday we started learning about the features of instructions. We each chose a set of instructions and looked for, the title; headings; pictures; imperative verbs (bossy language); and time adverbs (first, then, next).

On Friday, we continued our focus on instruction writing. We made a jam sandwich using different craft resources before looking at a set of instructions that had been chopped up. We used our knowledge from making the sandwich to help us sequence the instructions into the correct order.
