Home Learning Week beginning 4th May

Good Morning Year 2

You might notice that our home learning grid looks a little different this week. We have altered our grid to stay in line with the rest of the school although please be reassured that this grid is purely for guidance and suggestion, particularly for the children who benefit from extra structure and routine.

We are now setting you the English and Maths activities for you to complete each day.
You will also see that there is still Science and 2 topic activities to be completed, you can choose when you would like to enjoy them.

We are aware that Friday is a bank holiday. As a team we have decided to include some optional activities including a reading comprehension and family maths quiz.

This week we have included more guidance in our weekly plan in order to provide as much support to our families as we can.

Don’t forget you can also have a go at PE, Marvellous Maths, Phonics and Home/Life Skills.

Try to do a little bit of learning each day, not forgetting your important Bread and Butter Learning.

Our word of the week this week is:

regal

majestic, grand. very special and suitable for a king or queen.

Maybe you could include the word of the week when you write us your e-mail.

Bread and Butter Learning

·         Read your home reader books, a book from the library or from home. Try to read a little bit every day. There are lots of books on Bug Club.
·         Practise reading and spelling all the common exception words, these can be found on the blog. Choose the Year 1/2 words or Year 3/4 words.

Education City – see updated home learning week beginning 4th May

Monday/Day 1

English
This week we are going to be finding out and writing our own newspaper report about the story of Rapunzel that we read last week.
What can you remember about the story?

Task: find out about the features of newspaper articles. Read the example newspaper article to give you some ideas.
You could use a real report and highlight/underline the features, make a mind map or write a list.

Bronze: title, headings, author, date.
Silver: (all of bronze plus) layout, pictures, facts.
Gold: (bronze, silver and) discuss the text wording and tense it is written in.

Maths
How did you get on last week and the week before with our maths fractions topic?
Can you find or make fractions around the house?
How could you cut a sandwich in half or in quarters?
If you make a sandwich and your brother eats ¾ of it, how much of the sandwich is left for you?

Task: Can you watch the video and complete the
questions about
finding three quarters?
Remember, three quarters is ¼ + ¼ + ¼
¾ is 3 out of 4 pieces.
If we cut a cake into 4 pieces. To find three quarters,
we need 3
pieces of cake. That leaves one piece of cake (or ¼)
left.

Day 1 and 2 complete our fractions topic.

Tuesday/ Day 2

English
Think about the story of Rapunzel that we looked at last week, remind yourself of the story if you would like to.

Who is your favourite character from the story? Why do you like them? What is their role in the story?

Task: Can you choose a character from the story and write what they might say if they were interviewed for a newspaper? What would they say about the event that has happened in the story?

Maybe you could do this with a brother, sister or adult. One person could be the journalist (the one asking the questions) while the other person gets into character and answers the questions.
You could record your voices like a real life journalist or write the questions and answers on some paper.

You could also remind yourself about how to use question marks properly. Don’t forget your CFFS! Have a go at the BBC Supermovers video and dance along to remind yourself. You should all be experts at this, we love these in class!

Maths
How did you get on with your maths yesterday?
Today is our last lesson on fractions. See what you can remember by joining in with the BBC Supermovers video all about fractions.

Today your fractions lesson is learning how to count in fractions.
Remember a fraction is how much of an object/number or shape we are talking about.
If I cut a bar of chocolate into 3 pieces and I give my friend one piece, I have given her 1/3 because it is one out of three pieces.

Task: Can you watch the video and complete Summer Term, Week 1, Lesson 2 Count in Fractions?

How did you get on?
Have a go at some extension activities if you would like an extra challenge.

Wednesday/ Day 3

English (SPaG)
Today we are going to be continuing to think about the interview that we conducted with a character from the story.

Have you ever read a book and noticed these little punctuation marks?      These punctuation marks are called inverted commas but we might already know them as speech marks or 66 and 99.
Inverted commas are used when you are writing what someone is saying.

Have a look on your Education City home learning for this week. Have a go at the Learn Screen about Inverted Commas.

Task: Can you work through the PowerPoint and then complete the sheet about inverted commas?
Bronze: 1 star
Silver: 2 stars
Gold: 3 stars

Keep this learning in your brain, you are going to need it tomorrow!

Maths

Today we are starting a new maths topic on
measurement.

Can you remember what measurement is?
Why do we measure in cm or m?
What would happen if I measured the garden using my
shoes, and you measured the garden using your shoes?
Would we get the same answer? Why?

Have a look on this week’s Education City tasks. Have a go at
some of
the measuring learn screens and activities.

Task: Can you look through the PowerPoint about
how to use a ruler? Then watch the White Rose
video and complete Summer Term, Week 1,
Lesson 3 Measure Length (cm).

How did you get on? If you would like an extra challenge, have a go at the extension activity.

Thursday/ Day 4

English
Which character did you choose to interview from the story? Did you find out anything exciting that happened?
Today you are going to be a super journalist and write your own newspaper report about the story of Rapunzel.
Think back to the features of a newspaper, you might want to use the checklist to remind you of what to include.
Make sure your newspaper article has an interesting title.

Don’t forget to use the word mat to check your spellings.

Bronze: Can you include a title and clear newspaper layout?
Silver: Can you write in the past tense?
Gold: Can you use correct punctuation?
Extension: Can you include speech marks?

Do you think you now know lots about newspaper articles? Test your knowledge with the newspaper quiz!
Let us know how you get on.

Maths
Today we are continuing our learning about measuring.

Yesterday you learnt how to use a ruler accurately, measuring and draw lines in cm. We use cm to measure when the object is small.
We could measure the length of our road in cm but it might take a long time using small ruler. Instead, we can measure in metres.
Remember there are 100cm in 1m.

Have a look at the measuring activities on Education City for this week.

Task: Can you look through the PowerPoint on measuring in metres? Now watch Summer Term Week 1, Lesson 4 Measure Length (m).

How did you get on today?
Have a go at the measuring in metres extension activities.

Friday/ Day 5

English
Have you had a chance to go out for a walk or sit and enjoy the sounds of nature? Now is the perfect opportunity to learn about the wildlife around us.

Have a look at our live bird box at school.
What can you see? What do you notice? What kind of birds are they? Can you draw some pictures of the birds that you see? Try to add as much detail as possible. Perhaps you will see more of these birds when you go outside, you could take photos of make more drawings.

Task: Can you read the information about birds? Choose you level of challenge and complete the reading comprehension sheet.
Bronze: 1 star
Silver: 2 stars
Gold: 3 stars

Maths
Well done for completing our fractions topic and making a great start on our new measuring topic.
Today, maths is going to be something slightly different. It’s a Family Friday Challenge!
You could work together, with your family, or work individually and see who can crack the codes the fastest!
Ready, set….GO!

Some questions might be easy and some might be rather challenging, try your best and see what you can do.
If you’re challenging your family, don’t forget to let us know who won!

Topic

Science
Before the Easter holidays, we were learning about materials in science. We started to learn about the names of materials and their properties. We also started to consider which materials are most suitable for different projects.

Can you think of some objects that are made from wood? Is wood a natural or man-made material? Is wood living, non-living or has it never been alive?

Task: Can you create your own science experiment based around a castle you make?
e.g. You could make a castle out of a cardboard box and test to see how waterproof it is.
You could make lots of castles using different resources to find out which material is most suitable to stand up against strong winds.
Remember, this is your science experiment, you get to choose what you do and how you record and share your results!

Geography
In geography, we are continuing to find out about towers.
Task: Can you look at the pictures of towers from around the world? Use a map, atlas, or online source to match the towers to their location.
Choose how you want to display your findings. Maybe you could print out a map and the pictures and draw arrows to their location. Maybe you will draw each castle and use Google Earth to locate them. You decide.

Art
In art this week, we are going to carry on with our learning about Towers.
Task: Can you use natural resources to build a tower and measure it in cm?
You could gather your materials when you go out for a walk. Think carefully about the materials you choose.
What shapes and sizes do you need? What material will look best for each part of the tower? Why did you choose your materials?

Additional learning activities that we would be enjoying at school

Phonics
Play flashcards to practise all sounds that you have leant.

Read your spelling list and add sound buttons.
Practise ‘Look, Cover, Write and Check’ to practise the spellings in your best cursive handwriting.
