Home Learning week beginning 11th May


Good Morning Year 2
Welcome to another week of learning.

Please see your English and Maths activities for you to complete each day.
Please see your Science and 2 topic activities to be completed, you can choose when you would like to enjoy them.
Don’t forget you can also have a go at PE, Marvellous Maths, Phonics and Home/Life Skills.
Try to do a little bit of learning each day, not forgetting your important Bread and Butter Learning.

Our word of the week this week is:
rummage
to search or look through something, often untidily or unsystematically.
Maybe you could include the word of the week when you write us your e-mail.

Please note that our maths lessons are currently behind the dates named on the White Rose Website. For this week’s learning please see the Summer Term Week 2 (w/c 27th April) starting with Lesson 1 – Compare Lengths.
Education City Home Learning activities are on a timer to be released as from Monday 11th May. 

Please do not forget to send us a weekly e-mail to let us know how you are and tell us a little bit about your learning.


Bread and Butter Learning

·         Read your home reader books, a book from the library or from home. Try to read a little bit every day. There are lots of books on Bug Club.
·         Practise reading and spelling all the common exception words, these can be found on the blog. Choose the Year 1/2 words or Year 3/4 words.
·         Practise all the sounds you have learnt in phonics. There are lots of resources for this on Twinkl, Phonics Play and YouTube.
·         Practise number bonds to 10, 20 and 100. Hit The Button is a great game to help you. There are also games on Education City to help.
·         Practise your handwriting and letter formation using our joined up, cursive handwriting style. There is a help sheet on the blog.

Monday/Day 1

English
This week we are moving away from Rapunzel and our learning about Towers. This week we are going to start learning about Tunnels. Our English, this week, will be based on the story ‘The Tunnel’ by Antony Browne.

Follow the link and listen to the story The Tunnel. While you are watching the video, be thinking about what you would do if you were Rosie.

Task: Can you write some questions that you would ask Rose?

Don’t forget to include question marks, capital letters and finger spaces.

Maths
Last week we started to learn about measuring.
How did you get on?
What kind of things could you find around your house to practise measuring?

Today we are going to be comparing measurements, comparing the length of different objects.

Start off by watching the Flash Back 4 video. This will keep all the learning, you have done so far, fresh in your brain.

Now have a go at the BBC Supermovers workout video to remind yourself about length and height.

Remember to think carefully about which unit of measurement you would use, cm or m?

Tuesday/Day 2

English
What did you think about the story we read yesterday? What did you like about it? What did you not like about it?
Watch the video of the story again, thinking carefully about the order of events.

Task: Can you look at the pictures from the story and put them in the correct order?

Bronze: Put the pictures in order.
Silver: Add a label for some pictures.
Gold: Write a caption for each of the pictures.

You could print the pictures out and stick them in order, draw them yourself or number them.

Maths
Today, our maths lesson is about ordering lengths. You
already know how to compare lengths, now let’s learn
how to order them correctly.

Start off by watching the Flash Back 4 video.

Could use them to talk about objects around your house:

Short          shorter          shortest

Wednesday/Day 3

English
Use your learning from yesterday to help you recap the story.
If you were the author, Antony Browne, what would you change about the story?

Look at the example story map, you will remember drawing ones like these at school. Remember, picture story maps use pictures, simples and some important words to tell a story.

Task: Can you draw a picture story map to plan your own tunnel adventure?

Bronze: Use pictures and symbols to show a short story.
Silver: Show a clear beginning, middle and end.
Gold: Write a word bank of key words that you will include in the story.
Use your 5 senses to picture your story and its setting.
What does it look like and what can you see?
What can you smell?
What do you hear?
What can you taste?
What can you feel?

Next week we will be writing up the story in full so keep hold of your picture story map.

Maths
Today we are going to be continuing to learn about
measurement but this time using the four operations.

English
This week we are learning about tunnels.
Can you think of any animals that make tunnels underground?

Watch the video to find out about one tunnelling animal.

Task: Can you choose your level of challenge, read the information and answer the questions?

Gold – 3 stars

Maths
We are now at the end of our measuring lengths topic in maths. Today we are going to recap and complete some challenges to do with measuring.

Task: Can you complete the measuring challenges?

For one of the challenges, you will need to know what the word ‘estimate’ means. Use a dictionary, online source or ask an adult to help you find out what this word means.


























Friday/Day 5

English
Can you remember what the four types of sentences are?
Look through the PowerPoint to remind yourself.

Have a go at Paws for Effect and Safari Statements on your Education City home learning.

Task: Can you complete the sheet to recap the 4 different types of sentences?

Maths
Today is recapping Friday. You can choose which tasks you want to complete.

Task 1 includes a problem solving task and a mental maths challenge.

Task 2 includes a fast maths sheet and your end of topic quiz.

Science
This week we are focussing on tunnels.
Have a think about animals that live in tunnels.
How many animals can you think of?

Watch the short video clips about tunnelling animals.
If you enjoy the video, YouTube have a few episodes which explore the project in greater detail.

Task: Can you choose one tunnelling animal to focus on and explore. Choose how to present your findings.

You could make a fact file, video, PowerPoint, poster or information book. You decide!

Have a look at your science home learning on Education City to find out about animal habitats and their basic needs.

Geography
Last week you were finding out about towers from around the world.
Look back at the PowerPoint, which is your favourite tower?
Why do you like it?
Where in the world is the tower?

This week we will be exploring tunnels around the world.

Look at the PowerPoint of the tunnels.

Task: Can you find out where the tunnels are in the world using a map, atlas or online source?

You could print out the pictures and match them to an atlas.
You could label each picture with the correct country name.
You could draw each tunnel and label it.
Choose how you will display your findings.

Art
In English this week you have thought about your own tunnelling adventure story.
Today you are going to think in greater detail about the tunnel and the story setting.
Use your 5 senses to picture your setting.
What does it look like and what can you see?
What can you smell?
What do you hear?
What can you taste?
What can you feel?

Have a look at the PowerPoint and recap your picture story map for some inspiration.

Task: Can you make a picture of your tunnel?
You could make a painting, collage, drawing, use natural resources, etc.
You could make your creation sensory by including items that you can smell, taste, touch and hear.

Home/Life Skills
Lots of us wear shoes that have shoelaces.

Task: Can you learn and practise how to tie your shoelaces?

If you already know how to tie your shoelaces, have a go at this second video to learn tying laces a brand new way.
