Monday/Day 1

English

This week is dragon week! We will be using dragons to inspire us in our English and topic work.
First, listen to the story ‘Tell me a Dragon’. Think about all the different sorts of dragons described. We will be working more on this story tomorrow.
Today we are going to complete a reading comprehension called ‘The Dragon’s Eggs’. Read the text about some children who discovered a dragon and her eggs.
Can you answer the questions about the text? How about challenging yourself and completing the extension questions too?

Task: Can you complete the reading comprehension?

Maths

Let’s start off with some Flashback 4 problems.
See what you can remember and complete the problems.
This week we are going to be revisiting a maths topic that we looked at earlier in Year 2. The topic is data and statistics.

What can you remember about data?
How can data be collected?
How can data be displayed?

Today we are going to recap tally marks and tally charts.

Task: Can you complete Lesson 1?

Now complete the True or False questions to test your knowledge!

If you feel confident, try the extension challenge.

Tuesday/Day 2

English

Today we are going to look in more detail at some of the dragons from our story this week. Use yesterday’s link to re-watch the story.
Have a look at the pictures copied into the word document. In the book, there are only one or two phrases written about each dragon.
Today, can you write a more detailed description about one of the dragons? Choose your favourite. You can invent some of your own ideas using inspiration from others in the book.
How about thinking of the five senses? - sight, touch, taste, hearing and sound. How does your favourite dragon fly, eat, catch its prey or sleep? What are its special powers or features?

Task: Can you choose your favourite dragon and write a detailed description?

Maths

Have a go at today’s Flashback 4 questions.

Today we are going to look at pictograms and how to draw them. There are 2 versions of this lesson and activity, depending on how confident you are, or you could choose to complete them both!

The one star challenge looks at pictograms counting in 1s.
The two stars challenge looks at pictograms counting in different multiples.

Task: Can you complete Lesson 2?

Now complete the True or False questions.

How did you get on today? For an extra challenge,
have a go at the extension.

Wednesday/Day 3

English

Today we are going to think about designing our own dragon and using adjectives to describe it.
Listen again to the story of ‘Tell me a Dragon’ being read by the author.
Can you pick out some adjectives that are used to describe the dragons?
Today we would like you to draw a picture of your own dragon. You can colour this in too. After you have finished your picture, write a description of your dragon using some super adjectives and expanded noun phrases. Can you use a simile in your description?

Task: Can you use adjectives to describe your own dragon?

Maths

Complete today’s Flashback 4 questions.

Today we are going to be looking closely at pictograms and answering questions about them.

The one star challenge looks at pictograms counting in 1s.
The two stars challenge looks at pictograms counting in different multiples.

Task: Can you complete Lesson 3?

Complete the True or False questions to see what you have learnt today.

How did you get on today? Try our extension challenge.

You can re-watch the video of Tell me a Dragon here

Thursday/Day 4

English

Today we are going to learn about a new type of poem called a Kennings poem.

This is a kennings poem. Can you guess what the poem is about?

Fast-flier,
worm-eater,
loud-tweeter,
insect-swallower,
seed-pecker,
wing-flapper.

Have a look at the PowerPoint to learn more about kennings, think of ideas and write your own kennings poem about a dragon.
You can write a draft then write out a neat version in your best handwriting if you have time.
Don’t forget to illustrate your poem too.
You might want to write another kennings poem about your own idea.

Task: Can you write a kennings poem about a dragon?

Maths

Complete the 4 flashback questions to recap your mathematical knowledge.

Today, our maths lesson looks at block diagrams. Block diagrams are another way of displaying data and statistics.

Maths

It’s Recap Friday!
Work through the PowerPoint to revisit some of the maths skills and knowledge that you have collected this year.

Task: Can you complete the PowerPoint questions to recap?

Topic

Science VS fire safety (In school this will be taught on Tuesday)

Today we are going to be learning about fire and fire safety.
Think back to last year when we learnt about The Great Fire of London? Do you remember why the fire spread so quickly and took a while to be put out?

Read the story ‘Charlie the Firefighter’.
Next, read through the Fire Safety PowerPoint and lock in your brains all the ways that we can keep ourselves safe. Don’t forget to remember the ways that we can get help if there is a fire.

Task: Can you make a poster to explain fire safety

Art (In school this will be taught on Thursday)

For Art this week we would like you to try and use paper to create your own picture of a dragon.
Have a look at our example picture. Draw a swirly line to make your dragons body. You will need to carefully cut bits of paper into different shapes to make up your picture of a dragon and then glue them into place. Think about which shape you will use for the head and tail. Can you make your dragon look like he is breathing fire?

Task: Can you create a paper dragon using different shapes?

Cross-curricular VS George and the dragon (In school this will be taught on Wednesday)

To fit in with our dragon week topic, today we are going to find out about the story ‘George and the Dragon’. Start by reading through the PowerPoint story of George and the Dragon.

Next, read the information about George and the Dragon and choose your challenge level to complete the reading comprehension.

Task: Can you complete the George and the Dragon reading comprehension? Then choose one dragon craft to make.

To finish with, complete the word search to find the key words.

Additional learning activities

Phonics

Each week please choose just one Outdoor phonics challenge to focus on. These will be available for phonics each week.

Marvellous Maths

Each week please choose just one maths topic and complete the challenge cards. You can choose which level of ‘chilli challenge’ to complete.

Bronze: Nice and spicy
Silver: It’s getting hot
Gold: Burning up

Topics include:
-          Addition and subtraction
-          Fractions
-          Geometry
-          Measurement
-          Multiplication and division
-          Place value

Try to complete all the challenge cards over the next few weeks but focus mainly on the topics you find most challenging.

PE

You can choose from any of the Get Set 4 PE activities and challenges. These will be available every week on the blog.

Spanish

In Spanish this week we are learning about the days of the week.

Remind yourself of the days of the week song that we used to sing in Year 1 to help you remember their order.

Have a listen to the voice clips of the days of the week and practise saying them. You could print out the word cards and stick them on the fridge to help you practise.

Now have a go at the worksheet. Practise saying the words, cut them out, order them and then think about what you might do on each day.

Home/Life Skills

This week how about helping a grown up do some tidying in the garden. Do you know which plants are flowers or shrubs and which ones are weeds?
Can you name any common weeds?
Could you help to mow the grass or collect the cuttings?
What do we need to remember when working in the garden?

Think about safety. We must wash our hands after and never eat anything we find in the garden unless a grown up says it is safe.

We need to handle tools carefully and wear protective gloves if plants are prickly.

Task: Can you draw your favourite plant or weed from your garden? Some weeds are just as pretty as flowers! Use shading and colours to add detail.

Don’t forget to send us an e-mail every week to let us know how you are and share some of the fun activities that you have been learning about at home. We look forward to hearing from you. We are now in school every day with Key Worker children and Year 1 children. Please note that we are still reading and responding to e-mails however there may be a slight delay in responses. We hope to reply to you as soon as we can. Thank you for your understanding.
Year 2 Team.
