Weekly news
We
have had another great week in Year 2. On Monday we started planning our own
monster story based on our Grendel Power of Reading book. We used a story map
template to think about what our monster loves, what they wish for and then
what goes wrong! We also learnt about exclamation sentences and found out that
they must start with the word ‘what’ or ‘how’.
“How
exciting this is!”
“What
an amazing surprise!”
In
the afternoon we learnt about the basic needs of animals, including humans. We
found out that all animals need air, food and water in order to survive. Using
this knowledge, we wrote a fact file about our own monster to explain their
basic needs and likes.
On
Tuesday we continued our previous learning about fact families. We looked at
part whole models and then wrote 4 number sentences to explain the diagrams.
4 6 10
4
+ 6 = 10
6
+ 4 = 10
10
– 6 = 4
10
– 4 = 6
In
the afternoon we used junk and recycling products to make our monster. We
looked carefully at our previous sketches and tries hard to choose appropriate
materials to make our models.
On
Wednesday we looked at our story maps and starting writing our very own monster
story. We spent all day and worked really hard to produce an exciting adventure
story, including a front cover and a blurb!
On
Thursday we practised our addition skills using chips and peas. We learnt how
to draw the numbers and then counted the tens before adding the ones to find
the total of two numbers.
On
Friday we continued to practise our addition skills and even tried to solve
some addition word problems.
We
also loved the author visit from Nick Butterworth this week and he told us all
about his writing and illustrating. He was very engaging and we learnt a lot about
being an author.
Have
a lovely weekend
The
Year 2 team.
